10 Great College Snacks
Friday, August 16th, 2019
If you are getting your high school graduates packed up and off to college this August, you may be feeling a little emotional. If they are headed to the dorm, you probably received a checklist of the things to send them with, such as sheets and comforters, pillows, towels, an alarm clock, etc. Even if you have them hooked up with a meal plan, you can’t forget the snacks and easy prep meals to get them through late night studying, too short of meal breaks or days where they just can’t be bothered to go to the cafeteria, where the food may be questionable at best.
Consider this list to keep them fed and on track throughout their college days:
1. Apples
Apples are a staple because they are convenient, healthy, and refreshing when they come back from a long day of classes. They also make for a great grab-and-go fruit when running so late that the dining hall isn’t an option.
2. Nuts
Nuts are packed with protein, nuts are easy and filling. Grabbing a handful will help them stay full and focused during a five-hour cram session. Munching on pistachios, almonds, walnuts, or cashews should subdue that hunger.
3. Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans
Even if they have a state-of-the-art Keurig in their room, these will come in so handy. Each coffee bean has about 4 mg of caffeine. Considering the average coffee cup has 90 mg, it might sound like nothing, but they make a great pick me up when you’re running in between classes.
4. Cereal & Milk
In college, this is an acceptable meal any time of day. Just keep the milk in the mini-fridge (make sure they have one of these) and stock them up on their favorite cereals. Little trick – Almond milk lasts longer in case the milk keeps spoiling before used.
5. Protein Bars
Protein bars are so easy to throw in the backpack and have on hand to tide them over until the next meal.
6. Peanut Butter
It’s protein. They can put it on apples, bread, or just eat it off a spoon. It’s a great addition to things and will keep them going.
7. Instant Mac – N – Cheese
Two minutes in the microwave and you have cheesy goodness. Add some ham cubes and it’s a meal!
8. Ramen
College = Ramen! It’s cheap. It’s easy. It’s tasty. And you can doctor it up into all kinds of things to make it more interesting. Check out these fun hacks.
9. Instant Oatmeal
When it’s cold and they can’t deal with walking to the dining hall, instant oatmeal will do the trick. It’s a good source of nutrients as well, so let them enjoy!
10. Popcorn
For almost guilt free snacking, popcorn is a great option. Buy the pre-popped or pop some up in your microwave and have your whole floor craving some.
Keep the big kids stocked and they’ll love you for it! Grocery shopping can be a time sucker and when you are on a tight budget, knowing where your next meal will come from can be really stressful! Hook your kids up and see where they go.
