Coffee with Heart

At Heart of the Desert, we are passionate about our pistachios and wine, but we can’t start our day without the rich flavor of a good cup of coffee, especially when it’s infused with our favorite flavors. Recently, we introduced you to some of the amazingly unique Flavors of New Mexico that you can find in our specialty food store. Well, we couldn’t skip over one of our favorite products that keeps us going throughout the day, our specialty roasted coffees!

Our locally roasted coffees marry the flavors of fair-trade, organic Arabica coffee with our favorite nuts! This results in a nutty, one-of-a-kind flavor that is the best in New Mexico. Allow us to introduce our three flavors:

Piñon Coffee
If you look up coffee from New Mexico, you will undoubtedly see piñon coffee mentioned. The Piñon tree is the state tree of New Mexico! It is a small pine tree that grows in the semi-desert region and produces edible seeds that are highly nutritious and flavorful. Our piñon coffee is locally roasted with sweet piñon nuts and brings you to the high desert with every sip.

Pistachio Coffee
You know we’re nuts about our pistachios! Pistachios and coffee make the perfect pair. This coffee marries the flavors of fair-trade organic Arabica coffee with delicious pistachio extract. It’s locally roasted like our other coffees, so you know you’re starting your day with a unique coffee with flavors like no other.

Pecan Coffee
New Mexican pecans have a flavor unlike any other. Our pecan coffee is roasted with fresh pecans and seasoned with a hint of pecan extract to produce a buttery, nutty flavor that is sure to be a daily favorite!

Now that you’ve picked your favorite or maybe decided to try all three (we highly encourage this), how will you enjoy these amazing brews? Here are some tips for creating the perfect cup of our specialty coffees!

Choose your Brew Method
Coffee enthusiasts often debate over the best way to brew coffee. The good news is that there are many ways to brew your coffee and the perfect cup depends entirely on your preference!
Here are a few of our favorite ways to brew our specialty-roasted coffee.

– French Press
– Percolator
– AeroPress
– Pour-Over Drip Brewing

How Hot Should Your Water Be?
The optimal water temperature for brewing is 195-200*F. Remember, safety first! Be sure to heat your water carefully and follow your brewing method instructions to avoid accidents! It is important to use filtered water so that it does not affect the taste of the coffee. For every 6 ounces of water, you should add 1-2 tablespoons of ground coffee. This is known as the “Golden Ratio” and is the standard for coffee brewing.

How Long Should You Brew Your Coffee?
It depends entirely on your brewing method. Some coffee-to-water contact can be as quick as 30 seconds, while others can take 15 minutes. It depends on your method and taste preference.
Be sure to pay attention to your coffee’s taste. If you’re not happy with it, you may be over-extracting (letting it brew too long) or under-extracting (not allowing it to brew long enough).
We found THIS ARTICLE from Coffee Brewster extremely helpful because it outlined different brewing methods, pros, cons, and recommended times for brewing.

Time to Enjoy!
Remember, coffee begins to lose flavor after it is brewed. Once it has reached a safe temperature, go to your favorite spot, close your eyes, and imagine yourself in the serene, spectacular New Mexican desert. Take some time for yourself. You deserve it!

Remember, you can easily purchase one or all our specialty coffees in our online shop! If you’re in New Mexico, you can also visit us and enjoy a nice cup right on our Tuscan-inspired patio!
