New Year Intentions VS. Resolutions

Thursday, January 3rd, 2019

It’s the New Year and you are considering what was good and bad in the previous year. You’re contemplating how you want to fill your 365 page book in the new year. This is all normal and maybe even expected behavior, as we are presented with a fresh slate each year. The question is, what is the best way to go about setting a direction for yourself?

Resolutions

A resolution is a firm decision to do or not do something. Breaking a resolution is just as cliché as setting one. Why is this? Because if we become derailed by a bad week, we feel like we’ve failed and just give up. Failing at our resolutions create stress and even personal guilt for not reaching our goals. Sometimes failing quickly, to get on with our lives, is easier than working at something.

Intentions

An intention is an aim or a plan. This gives you direction on setting and reaching your goals without the pressure of being perfect. With an intention, you start with an end goal then develop and work on the steps to get you there.

Resolution or Intention

If you have set a resolution to lose weight, you might say, “I’m going to lose 10 pounds this year”. Now you have to do everything you can to lose that weight, work out daily, don’t eat sugar, etc. etc. What happens if you have a busy, stressful week and you end up eating fast food two nights in a row and can’t make it to the gym? You jump ship and fall back into your old habits completely breaking your resolution. It’s a fail!

Now, if you set your intention to get healthier in the new year, which includes losing weight, you will develop a plan to do this. It may look like: 1) Set appointment with doctor to run some blood tests and discuss my health. 2) Start following the Mediterranean Diet to the best of my ability. 3) Add regular exercise into my week. Now you have a plan. If you have a few bad days, you can just go right back to your steps and keep going.

It’s never too late to set an intention!

Whatever you decide works best for you, we hope you stay the path and accomplish your goals this year! If part of your goals are to have a healthier lifestyle, consider adding pistachios and red wine to your diet. They offer a litany of health benefits!
