mother's day gifts

Mother’s Day is a tricky thing and a mom’s desires really change depending on the age of her children. We all want to get mom what she really craves. Afterall, she did bring us into the world and raise us to be the wonderful people that we are. Mom’s first choice in a gift is never a gift you go out and purchase. Forget the old standbys of flowers and brunch and try something new that will really get to her heart. Have a look at these eleven ideas to see what you can come up with for that special mom in your life.

Time

The number one thing moms want from their adult children, is their time. If you can, go hang out with your mom for the day. Spend the day doing things she likes. Obviously, that is going to look different for every mom. Maybe it’s going shopping, stopping for a yummy lunch and getting massages or pedicures together. It could be going to your local nursery, picking up plants/flowers, then spending the morning gardening, making a healthy lunch together, then spending the afternoon playing a game of cards and catching up. Whatever you do, she’ll be thrilled that you took time out of your busy schedule to hang out with her.

Sleep

The number one thing moms want with young children, is sleep. Uninterrupted, overnight sleep and a nap. That’s going to fall on the husband to make that happen. You’re going to have to keep the kiddos occupied for the day. That may mean you are doing the entertaining or perhaps you are leaving them with grandma and grandpa for the day…they love time with their grandkids. The kids could give mom things that help with comfortable sleep. Maybe some comfy, cozy pajamas, a body pillow or a super plush blanket that feels great on the skin. A new mattress isn’t out of the question either. Lavender essential oils with a diffuser or an Ap that helps with sleep, like Calm or similar, might also be good options. You have no idea how thankful she will be!

A Clean House

Who doesn’t want a clean house? I don’t know about you, but I do love a clean house, especially if I don’t have to do the work. Does that mean hiring a maid for the day or hiring one to come in once a month, sure, if you can afford it. If not, gather the kids and make it a group project. There are ways to make it fun. Put all the toys away, vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, wipe down all the bathroom and kitchen surfaces, do the dishes and do the ever-dreaded laundry AND put it away!!!

A Clean Car

This is easy and inexpensive. You can do it yourself, but make sure to vacuum the inside, clean the windows and wipe down the surfaces with some Armor All. Or just take it to the local carwash for a detail. Pick a scent you know she’ll like. It may seem like a little gesture, but it will be so appreciated.

A Hand-written Note

Can’t make to hang out with mom, put your feelings for her into words. Write a heartfelt, love letter to mom filled with good memories. Make her laugh, make her cry, fill it with all the good stuff. She will be so touched! Include it with one of the following gift ideas and she’ll be one happy lady.

A Basket Filled with All of Her Favorite Things

Hopefully, you know what your mom likes. But if you don’t, enlist your pops for some ideas. It could include her favorite snack, bottle of wine, favorite scent, a book by her favorite author (maybe even autographed), Tickets to an upcoming show that you know she’d love – if you can go with her, even better!

Subscription Box

There are subscription boxes for everyone! If she likes to cook, or doesn’t, but must, a subscription box with easy dishes to make that include all the ingredients might be perfect. She doesn’t have to go to the grocery store or think about what she is going to make. There really is a subscription box for everybody, from beauty, books, to gardening and everything in between. Check out www.cratejoy.com for ideas.

Wine

Enjoying a glass of wine is a great way to end a busy day of chasing children, enduring a long day of work or just to sit on the porch and watch the sunset. Buy your mom her favorite bottle, or even better, sign her up for a wine of the month club, so she can appreciate trying brands and varietals that she isn’t familiar with.

Family Pictures

Mom always wants to keep her family close. If she still has young kids, dad can set up a photographer to come over and take some new images or dress everyone up and go to a studio or beautiful setting. For grown children, have some taken of your family. Either have them nicely framed for her to hang or get a digital frame and share lots of memories with her of her kids and grandkids.

Spa Day

Set mom up with a day of pampering. Buy her a massage, manicure, pedicure and a facial. If this isn’t in your budget, get the kids involved and make a home spa with bath salts, candles and an uninterrupted hot bath with a glass of wine and her favorite music playing. A nice pedicure kit with a variety of polishes also make for a nice do-it-yourself option. Hubby can always offer up a massage to go with it!

Ultimate Mom Day

If you are really feeling motivated, give her a day away from being a mom. Allow her plenty of sleep, no cooking, no dishes, no laundry, no breaking up fights with the kids. Help her plan a day of just being her. Maybe plan for her to do a couple of spa treatments in the morning, meet a girlfriend for lunch, enjoy an afternoon nap and catch up on some reading, then take her out for a date at a nice restaurant – or cook dinner AND clean-up. She will be so relaxed and happy with you!

Make Mother’s Day all about mom. Try not to think of Mother’s Day as an obligation, instead, think of it as a celebration of the woman that brought you into this world, or gave you kids, if you’re the dad trying to figure it out for your wife. It’s really not about stuff. It’s about memories, sharing time, making life easier and more enjoyable. It’s about showing your mom you really do care about her. Make your mom’s day! There will come a time that she is no longer around, and you’ll wish you had one more chance to tell her how you feel and make her feel special. Tell her you love her, while you still can!
